What we want to cover:

We want to profile a set of river towns along the Susquehanna River that are part of the Susquehanna Greenway’s network of designated ‘River Towns’ and that could also serve as great weekend getaway for paddlers, cyclists, or car-based tourists alike. This would be a feature article [1800-2500 words, including 8 or so photographs and appearing in a summer issue (MA, MJ or JA 2020)], focused on three to five different river towns, with a sidebar listing of other river towns (Susquehanna Greenway designated or not) that are worth a visit.

For more information on the Susquehanna Greenway’s 15 river towns already designated and others currently “in progress” see:

https://www.susquehannagreenway.org/river-towns

Examples of river towns to include might be Northumberland (at the junction of the North and West branches of the Susquehanna), Danville or Lewisburg on the Middle Susquehanna, or Lock Haven and Williamsport on the West Branch.

Who might be the best person:

Those who are familiar with or already paddle, cycle, or hike the Susquehanna Greenway’s parks and water trails. If you are interested in selecting a set of towns as part of a multi-day boat or bike trip on/along the Susquehanna River we would interested in working with you to identify a set of towns with accommodations that would provide a feasible itinerary. We would, however, expect you to also spend time in each of the towns visiting nearby attractions (local museums, restaurants, etc.) so that you can also write about the river towns and what they have to offer to those who might visit on a weekend getaway whether or not they are interested in the outdoor recreation activities and / or the town’s local history. We may assign a separate photographer for this story, but if you take photos, please also let us know.

What to Cover/Emphasize in the Story:

  • local history, particularly the towns’ connection to the Susquehanna River
  • nearby attractions for people with different interests (i.e. museums, tours, state parks)
  • unique restaurants and accommodation for those planning an overnight stay or weekend getaway

If you are interested in writing this feature story for Pennsylvania Magazine, please contact Matt Holliday at [email protected] with an overview of why you’re the best one for the assignment (if we haven’t worked with you, references and tear sheets are requested).

Include in your proposal your set of 3-5 river towns with a brief justification of why these are the best and what attractions would be covered in each.
