More about May/June 2010 contents photo

When: May 12th at dawn

Where: The northern section of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, 4 miles south of Milford. Photo was taken from the cliffs called Indian Point, which overlook the Upper Del. R. where it splits. The land on the opposite side of the river is Namanock Island.

Who: Jeffrey Williams, see his Web site: http://www.williamslandscapephotography.com/

The morning I took this photo ranks as one of my best photography experiences.

It was absolutely surreal. I had never been there before, but had seen the cliffs from the river many times.

It looked like it would have a great view. Eventually, I decided to check it out, knowing it had to be a sunrise shoot. I hiked up the mountain from the back side, in the dark, with no trail, until I reached the highest point along the cliff.

The low lying fog was a major bonus. As it got lighter, turkeys started gobbling on both sides of the river and ducks and geese were squawking as they flew in front of me at eye level.

Hawks were also cruising along the edge of the cliff. What really amazed me was that every 20 minutes, the scene changed as the fog drifted, the light changed, and different areas of the landscape were reveled.

My final treat occurred when I finally took a break and looked behind me. I realized there were warblers everywhere. Great morning!

This is definitely a special place.
